Grimly intriguing from the first page onward and set in beautiful Scotland in the aftermath of a woman’s tragedy, Morvern Callar is a story of a girl’s very unconventional dealings with grief, loss and despair, while music is the bright light in her darkness.
It’s not just the constant mentions of warjer painting in the book what was that? I found my attention straying a bit as well, although I did like the final scenes once she returned to Scotland in the very last pages after the time jump. The path from my hired apartment to the beach front was like out the Bible under the feirceness of such sun. The triumphs in this novel were many, and the soundtrack to each scene is as integral to play as you are reading as are the descriptions of light under the water in the loch as Morvern is swimming.
I think it was probably that Warner wasn’t adept enough at first person narrative to get everything across. I was impressed with how the author morverrn really tried to hedge his bets or rationalize her actions.

Morvern Callar Reader’s Guide
Seriously my local op shop is a gold mine of awesome books. But my views about Morvern did start to turn I saw the letter from the seemingly bodiless author who had sent the manuscript to Morvern.
Morvern, in the second to last chapter of the mofvern, wanders in the effortlessness of being a witness to natural beauty, and to silence, like her name in Spanish, Callar. I’ve mostly read mixed things about the sequel to this book, but I am a bit curious to check it out, just for completeness sake.

Morton is the best because I feel Aln can read her the way I can only read those I know best in the world. I saw the film 8 years ago so my memory is fuzzy but my recollection is that it was great looking, a good performance by Samantha Morton, but I didn’t connect.
