The book was one of the first to examine such issues as Winnie Mandela ‘s crimes, and State President Frederik Willem de Klerk ‘s suspected attempts to use the security forces to derail peace talks. One of my concerns, however, was whether Sampson could provide an objective analysis of Mandela, the ANC African National Congressand those who surrounded and influenced the future South African president especially his controversial second wife, Winnie.
