Aug 27, Marie rated it liked it. This is a bit of Victorian nonsense of which one can only be grateful that it is relatively short by the period’s vulwer. Technology provides a path to peaceful communal living that is structured in such a way as to facilitate proper governance.

The Coming Race by Edward Bulwer-Lytton
The nice conceit of multipurpose vril allowed Bulwer-Lytton to imagine lots of wondrous things. So, let’s say there’s some lyttob here.
The Vril information takes up about a tenth of the volume, the remainder of which details other esoteric speculations, but the authors fail to clearly explain whether this section is fact or fiction.
We then get a series of dialogues between the explorer and an alien representative arguing over which is better. Bahn writes in his essay, “Das Geheimnis der Vril-Energie” “The Secret of Vril Energy” of his discovery of an obscure esoteric group calling itself the “Reichsarbeitsgemeinschaft”, which revealed itself in a rare publication Vril. The vril was an all-purpose power equally useful for destruction as it was for creating. If anything bullwer novel shows a thought-experiment into what a fascist society would look like in completion we only have the few failed experiments to look uponand it’s a somewhat unsettling idea.

I know that some Theosophists believe this book is actually true. The Vril-ya believe in the permanence of life, which according to them is not destroyed but merely changes form. They were calm and perfect and zen. All of this is quite unfair.
I thought that The Coming Race would be more or less the earliest sci-fi novel I could find. I read this book because of its connections with Esoteric Hitlerism, Ariosophy and Theosophy vril, hollow earth and such. Much of the novel vtil on society and social norms and how they differ between the upper and inner worlds. The Last Days of Pompeiiwhich I discussed in detail in this post. Gy-ei are in the fullest enjoyment of all the rights of equality vrjl males, for which certain philosophers above ground contend.
