Tompkins could have been a bit more scholarly about those. Calvin Tomkins is simply a great writer. This book is important because it inspires everyone to question everything you take for granted, and enjoy puns and jokes and the lighter side of life, and that art is there bioraphy everyone, not for patrons and the elite, for you and me, and that the contrary notion is absurd.

And I think I have some idea, as I’ve been doing research for a film about Marcel Duchamp, and this is the best, most detailed and comprehensive book I’ve encountered. This book paints a real vivid portrait of MD the person as opposed tojkins the comic book charcter you’ve all been instructed to adore.

I suppose you could say that Tomkinss real work of art was his life, and while Duchamps himself remains elusive, the portraits of Picabia, Jarry, Wood, Arensburg, etc biograaphy fascinating.
