A face only illuminated by the distant light of the stars. Elegies are supposed to give us the sense of lament and to bring us to a more mitcheell and pensive mood. Rainer Maria Rilke is one of my all-time favorite poets – an artist of stunningly original gifts. Previously I gave a poor rating to an edition of The Duino Elegies; this book proves that it was the translation at fault, not the Rilke.
It seems wrong to mark this as “read”, as I don’t think I stepen ever be done with it.

I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in seeing the original German alongside Mitchell’s translation and also for anyone fascinated by the most essential “Things” in life.

In the end, those who were carried off early no longer need us: Rilke’s poems are notoriously difficult to capture in other languages, and the Elegies and Sonnets are no exception. An undisputed masterpiece by one of the greatest modern poets, translated here by a master of translation. A gust inside the god. I stepphen certainly not an expert but I found his poetical melody quite unique.

About Rainer Maria Rilke. His exquisite lyricism and the images he described left me in awe. A nice edition but Stephen Mitchell’s translation hits me the hardest. Lists with This Book. Written with a superb language, they are made of metaphors that express many emotions and reflections that define human beings.

I’ve never really liked poetry unless I’m teaching it because only then do I take the time to appreciate it. The highs and lows are so dizzyingly high and so mind-numbingly, banally low that I couldn’t always keep pace.
He also wrote eelegies than poems in French, dedicated to his homeland of choice, the canton of Valais in Switzerland. And if the earthly no longer knows your name, whisper to the silent earth: And it was almost a girl and came to be out of this single joy of song and lyre and through her green veils shone forth radiantly and made herself a bed inside my ear.
The last two elegies are brilliantly written. Rilke’s verse has been attempted by many a translator Edward Snow and Stephen Mitchell are favoritesbut not one has truly approached the master himself.

Rilke’s work will make you investigate yourself and your grief and your love for the world.
