Whenever there was a girl in his life, I went from feeling sympathetic to hating him. Irving Stone masterfully illustrates a life built upon that premise. The description of his feelings in his last moemnts is just too flat and mechanical. Maybe he was so innocent as to appear different from other folks causing the widespread dislike with the exception of the Borinage.

There is a lot of French language in it also irvingg can be challenging. What was their tsone offense that made them outcasts and pariahs? He was never anhepo able to live much outside of his work circumstances due to being so driven and focused on his goals, no matter how unreachable they seemed, and never doing anything to earn money for himself.

Whether he painted well or badly didn’t matter; painting was the stuff that held him together as a man. I’m looking forward to reading the collected letters of Vincent Van Gogh and see how I feel about this book afterwards. The book was well written, but Vincent was a little hard to be around. For example, he spent many years living in Italy while working on The Agony and the Ecstasy.

His poor parents and brother spend he whole time bailing him out of money troubles and women troubles and this guy just keeps whining. The premise guiding his life was that there is no beauty in happiness and that true beauty can only result from pain and suffering.

Stone’s main source for Lust for Life, as noted in the afterword, were Van Gogh’s letters to his brother Theo. I will look at his art work with a fresh eye and appreciation. I really didn’t enjoy the language and I think it has a lot to do with how old the qnhelo is – maybe this is how people expressed drama in the 30s? I felt like the novel was too pleasant irviny too simple to describe the complex characters of Vincent Van Gogh.

If there actually is a book of the Van Gogh letters between Vincent and Theo I think that would be an interesting read.
