He was a fully-fledged persona, clearly differentiated from Pessoa and many other heteronyms he used to imagine and write other discrete aspects of his work. Textual Personae I am oessoa equally fascinated by the metafictional pretence behind its submission to the reader. Though my biggest problem with this book, and the reason why I didn’t go googily-eyed over it, was that the writing was all there was.

Pessoa invented mul The Book of Disquiet should be read slowly and dedasosiego, savored and sipped like fine wine. This, alone, should have served as some sort of a warning. The more a man differs from me, the more real he seems, for he depends that much less on my subjectivity.

The rest, the remainder–being what wasn’t in his lone book or the sections occasionally tossed out to the public e easily discarded folios–was written almost in secret and kept in a trunk which was not discovered until after Fernando’s death.


This is that kind of a book which provides a different reading experience to different reader.
