There was an error submitting review. BUt I trust you. Instead, Ibbotson saved all the action for the very end, and basically all of it happens off-“screen”. Eva passed away at her home in Newcastle on 20 October But they never forget each other, and in the end, their love triumphs. A Song for Summer : Eva Ibbotson :
The parts of the story set in Hallendorf, the village and the cottage were pleasant to read. This is supposed to be young adult? His best friend is Jewish, and the Nazi regime is now in power sum,er so his friend is banned from performing, so Marek refuses to continue doing it. The hero is Marek, the dashing gardener and fencing teacher who is also a member of the Resistance and a very famous compose I’m going to have to go ahead and call this book flat out silly.
Jul 16, Margaret rated it it was amazing. Marek seemed to aloof, and Ellen was too much of a Mother Theresa. Oh well, I still have to go through her children’s novels and I have a feeling they’re good too. The plot begins to climax and then fizzles with him, climbing again to end happily but there is no ahhhh of relief and feeling fulfilled at the end.
There are several married couples that cheat on one another toward the end including the heroine the Russian ballerina is just vulgar, and the children in the book are shipped off to an anarchy-driven school by disinterested parents. May 12, Sarah rated it it was amazing. As Hitler’s troops spread across Europe, Ellen has promises to keep, even if they mean she must sacrifice her future happiness. About the last sixth of the book I had high hopes in protagonist and author that Ellen would make the right decision and abandon him, but who am I to hope.
In evva, the whole place is in desperate need of Ellen’s attention. Delightful fluff, with the historical troubles admitted and struggled with. The heroine is Ellen, the domestic goddess who loves cooking and hugging babies and efa beautiful beyond compare. I feel kind of bad that I’ve finished reading all of her YA novels because I want more of them!

The end was finally what really disappointed me. And this “real” love interest, he’s a lot like Ellen. The beginning really appealed to me.
Here are some of our favourites to get you talking about your emotions. Once again blown away with Ibbotson’s ability to create ”magic” squarely within our very ordinary world. I feel about this author the way I do about Heyer: What is a Song for Summer? I could go on like this for hours. I loved this book because it was so delightfully funny and upbeat, especially considering the topics it covers. But her life becomes decidedly more complicated as she forms a friendship with the mysterious school gardener Marek.
He risks his life every time he does it, because he can’t just sit idly by and not do anything to help. Jul 02, Erica rated it it was ok. In the end her love-interest, Marek, disappoints.
She wrote for both adults and children. Nevertheless, even after many tragedies and hurdles along the way, the book ends with happiness for both, a fitting finale for such a book. All in all, it is a good read in the general sense of plot and well-written characters.
A Song for Summer by Eva Ibbotson – review
Let me just say there are opera divas and storks, musicians and rescues, and one of my favorite scenes of community togetherness that I’ve ever read. Refresh and try again. Imaginative and humorous, Eva’s books often convey her love of nature, in particular the Austrian countryside, which is eong in works such as The Star of Kazan and A Song for Summer.
The only actually good thing one could say about him, is that he isn’t a Nazi. Ibbktson story’s heroine, young Ellen, relocates from England to Austria, partly to escape the expectations of her suffragette mother and aunts.
